My 4100 has just reached 50 hrs and I have changed the oil per owners manual. The manual specifies 2.7 qts with new filter. However, this appears to be incorrect .... it really should be 1.7 qts!!! I had to drain 1qt out of crank case!@!! I called the JD dealer service dept and they say the service manual indicates 4100 oil capacity at 2.3 qts. I just hope I have not damaged the engine by running it for 5minutes with excess 1qt of oil!! 4100 owners ... be aware of this incorrect owners manual information.

jrsauber, The first owners manual that came with my 4700 had numerous mistakes in the printing also. That was July 2000. I got an updated one in April 2001 after requesting an accurate manual, better but not totally correct. Seems JD has had many quality control problems with more than just the 4000 series machines.

I've heard the wrong manual oil story before. Running an over-filled motor a bit shouldn't hurt it.
Nice the manual might have gotten straighten-out. However, it's not exactly a new problem. My favourite one for my mid-80's Ford 1710 is that the owners manual doesn't say the engine has to be running to adjust the power steering sector, but the repair manual does. I spent some time trying to adjust the steering before I got the repair manual. Actually, it was a comment, maybe from this Board that clued me in. The repair manual simply confirmed it. This Board often is more helpful than other places, including the manual.

I'm reckoning the errors in the manuals are during conversions from litres to quarts ....

When I changed my oil and filter three weeks ago my 4100 took exactly 2 qts. to max out the dip stick. ....
